Chinese Concept

The earliest recorded arrival of the Chinese in Melaka was in 1405, led by Admiral Cheng Ho. Since then, their presence has been woven into the local fabric, their unique culture largely maintained and partly assimilated. The Chinese continue to practise many traditions the way their ancestors did, contributing to the fusion of inheritance that makes Melaka what it is today.

Clip-Clop Room

The clip-clop of wooden clogs used to permeate the streets of Melaka, back in the day when they were the footwear of choice among the Chinese. Built of raised soles, they were finished with a plastic band across the top of the foot that was traditionally red for women and green for men. Over the years, usage dwindled but their popularity as souvenirs rose as did the spectrum of colours they come in. The Clip-Clop Room recalls the unhurried lifestyle of that bygone era, cocooning you in comforting terracotta shades and highlighted by a gigantic clog constructed of regular clogs.

Oriental Beauty Room

She peeks from a corner, her flawless skin and heart-shaped pout framed by a 1920s-style crimped bob. A pair of Chinese gold coins float above two stalks of peony. You may not know the name but you know the gold-tinged box and you remember Sam Fong Hoi Tong as the white pressed powder that your mother or grandmother always had on her dressing table. In the Oriental Beauty Room, the petite powder cases make a statement in the form of the Chinese character for ‘beautiful’. Complemented by pastel patterned tiles and sanguine lemon hues, this tranquil room is a paean to timeless elegance.

Lattice Room

Whether it’s a simplistic platform or a decorated canopy, the bed is the most important component that can elevate the comfort of an everyday room to the intimacy of a boudoir. Fusing the two, the Lattice Room is a study in contrast: Luxury that is contemporary yet steeped in heritage, all bathed in warm undertones. A finely-carved lattice arch, modelled after antique Chinese folding screens, frames the sleep area to create an inviting room within a room, hinting at tranquil slumber.

Screen Suite

Traditional Chinese architecture is iconic for a variety of elaborate features, with latticework being one of its most recognisable. Seen in furnishings like doors, partitions, windows and folding screens, they boast of geometric motifs that are as much a visual treat as a study in Chinese symbolism. Presented as a wall installation in the Screen Suite, the time-honoured trait transforms into a contemporary art piece and lends a regal outlook to the generous space that fits a living lounge beside a cushy bed meant for two.
