Dutch Concept

The Portuguese’ reign in Melaka ended with the arrival of the Dutch in 1641, and they remained in power for more than 180 years. It was a relatively uneventful period and like the Portuguese before them, the Dutch also bequeathed a built heritage on Melaka. The Dutch Square is their best legacy, a complex of buildings sporting bold terracotta red facades that now house museums, a church and a clock tower.

Dutch Square Room

You can’t miss the Dutch Square when in Melaka, a striking terracotta-red complex made even more eye-catching by fancy trishaws parked along its periphery, waiting to ferry tourists on sightseeing tours. Built in the 18th-century, Christ Church Melaka is part of this prominent landmark and the muse behind this room. A stylised replica crowns the bed, enhanced by arches and columns in the same bold hue and supported by soft furnishings in gentle coral tones. The toasty spectrum envelops like an assuring blanket you would want to cuddle up under.

Kapit Room

They emanate the aroma of vanilla and baked eggs, and take the shape of thin and crispy triangular wafers. Kuih kapit, also known as kuih Belanda and ‘love letters’, is a traditional biscuit that is a must-have during Chinese New Year. Tightly woven into the Malaysian cultural fabric, the crunchy creation has its roots in Dutch waffles, made by baking batter over charcoal fire using handheld hinged iron plates. In the bright and cheerful Kapit Room, a circular display of the patterned moulds commemorates this delicious legacy left by the Dutch during their 183-year reign of Melaka.

*In Malay, ‘kapit’ means to clamp or compress, referring to the way these biscuits are made.
