Peranakan Concept

While preserving their way of life, the Chinese also welcomed local Malay customs into their fold and birthed an inimitable subculture known as Peranakan. The men and women, known as Babas and Nyonyas respectively, epitomised the seamless integration of two cultures in their customs, costumes, cuisine, language and arts. The Nyonyas’ baju panjang, for example, was adapted from the Malay baju kurung; Peranakan dishes are recognisably Chinese but flavoured with spices typical of Malay cuisine; their patois is a delightful harmony of the Hokkien dialect with Malay phrases.

Cherki Room

Bathed in crisp white freshness with lifting accents of green, the Cherki Room radiates a laidback disposition that’s just the mood to be in on a well-deserved getaway. It recalls idyllic afternoons at a Peranakan home of yore, when the Nyonya women gathered to trade gossip and chew betel nut while wagering their luck in cherki, a card game not unlike mahjong. A traditional deck features rectangular cards with Chinese prints that, framed and set against the vibrant wall, add a subtle touch of heritage to this thoughtfully-appointed twin room.

Manek Room

Like a flower garden in the throes of spring, pink peonies bloom against powder blue skies in a poetic dreamscape in the Manek Room. Immortalised in stunning bead art that was delicately strung by hand, the two conversation pieces showcase the fine embroidery and beadwork that Peranakan women are revered for. The rest of the spacious double room is awash in soothing neutral tones to serve as an unfettered canvas that lets the traveller immerse in Melaka’s cultural essence.

*'Manek' means 'beads' in Malay; the modern spelling is 'manik'.

Little Nyonya Room

The genuine warmth of the Peranakans is well reflected in the Little Nyonya Room that looks out onto the storied walkways of Jonker Street. Adding colour to this cheerful sanctuary is a capsule wardrobe of ornate accessories that were fashionable among the women, or Nyonyas, back in the day. Encased in glass boxes, they include actual antiques that have been passed down through generations. As you relax on the plush bed, look up for a glimpse into the women’s immaculate sense of style and take a jaunt through fashion past.

Hundred Peonies Room

The marriage of Chinese and Malay elements in Peranakan culture birthed gorgeous aesthetics, as depicted in their distinctive porcelain ware. The peony is one of several recurring floral motifs that adorn tableware and cutlery, embraced for it symbolises luck and wealth. In the serene all-white Hundred Peonies room, the flower is captured in an installation art of 100 miniature porcelain spoons. Each is of a different but equally striking shade – fuchsia pink, sunshine yellow, cobalt blue, vibrant purple and sea green – that altogether, make up the Peranakans’ preferred palette of bold, festive hues.
