Portuguese Concept

Melaka’s strategic position as a port and trading hub in the 16th century attracted the attention of foreign powers, the Portuguese among them. They conquered Melaka in 1511 and went on to rule for 130 years, leaving behind important landmarks such as the A’Famosa and the Kristang ethnic group, a result of marriage with locals. A small Portuguese village in Melaka’s Ujong Pasir continues to upkeep traditions, including festivals such as Fiesta San Pedro.

Azulejos Room

From the moment you step inside the Azulejos Room, the mosaic wall commands attention with its eye-catching collage of painted ceramic tiles glazed with tin. Popular in Portuguese architecture, these Azulejos tiles graced both the interiors and facades of palaces, churches, schools, and homes with swirls of vibrant colours and patterns that told of legends and historical milestones. More than just decorative, they also helped regulate temperature by protecting against heat and dampness. The tiles brighten up this well-lit room that sleeps two comfortably, with space for an additional bed.

Fortaleza Suite

With pristine white interiors and ocean blue trims, the Fortaleza Suite may suggest a coastal inspiration but its influence came from a far loftier place – the Fortaleza de Malaca, or Fort of Melaka. Encircling St Paul’s Hill, where the A’Famosa stands, the fort comprised four bastions and supported 70 cannons. The Portuguese were so well protected within its 2m-thick walls that they managed to fend off the Dutch for five months. Fortaleza Suite affords guests the same peace of mind, conceived as a refuge to unwind in style after a day of exploring Melaka’s nostalgic charm.
